Saemonza (左衛門佐), real name Kiyomi Sugiyama (杉山 清美, Sugiyama Kiyomi), is the gunner of the Hippo Team and one of the supporting protagonists of Girls und Panzer.
Profile[]
Saemonza is a second year student from Ooarai Girls High School and the gunner of Hippo Team's StuG III. She's a member of the history buffs club or Reki-jo.
Appearance[]
Saemonza is medium-seized girl, with long red-brown hair and dark brown eyes, but she always have left eye closed. She wears a red headband tided into ribbon on the back side. On that headbend are depicted six (yellow) circles with square hole in it (the emblem of the Sanada clan). She also wear muneate chest protector (used by women in kyūdō), and often carries a bow (less often in the anime). She is seen to wear Oarai school uniform, and long dark red stockings.
Personality[]
Saemonza is well known for her expertise on history of the Sengoku period. She also reflect that period by her behaivour. She usually closes her left eye like she is aiming her bow. She have good relations with another members of Oarai history buffs club.
Etymology[]
- The name Kiyomi means "clear, pure, clean" (清) (kiyo) and "beautiful" (美) (mi).
- Her alias name Saemonza means "samurai" (左衛) (sae), "gate" (門) (mon) and "help, aid" (佐) (sa/za).
- Kiyomi's surname Sugiyama means "cedar" (杉) (sugi) and "mountain, hill" (山) (yama).
Trivia[]
- Her nickname is based on Sanada Yukimura.
- Her favorite flower is the Bellflower and her favorite tank is the U.S. M4 105mm (HVSS).
- A MLLSD 4koma heavily suggested that Saemonza doesn't wear any underwear. When Saori asks her and Oryou if it's true that Japanese women didn't wear underwear until recently, they confirm that's true, including during their favorite historical periods, and finish with a grin that implies they are, indeed, being historically accurate.
- The same detail is also suggested for Saemonza in the 12th Omake (a kind of BTS of what happens in MLLSD C24): when Hippo Team is in the water, Erwin finds a floating skirt, and the way Erwin makes haste to hide Saemonza suggests the skirt is hers and that she doesn't wear anything under it.
- Saemonza's birthday is December 3, the same date in 1944 as the start of the Dekemvriana, a series of clashes that occurred in Athens as part of the Greek Civil War.
