The Neubaufahrzeug (German for "new construction vehicle") was Germany's first attempt to create a heavy tank for the Wehrmacht during the Interwar.

History[]

Development[]

Based on the Großtraktor project (codename to bypass the tank building interdiction by the Treaty of Versailles), that took its roots in other multi-turreted tanks like the British Vickers A1E1 Independent that inspired the Russian T-28 and T-35, in order to modernise their military put in the hands of Rheinmetall and Krupp in 1933 after Hitler's rise in power.

In 1934, the first two prototypes build in mild steel by Rheinmetall with a turret armed with a 75 mm KwK L/24 main gun and secondary 37 mm KwK L/45 mounted in tandem with two Panzer I turrets mounted in lozenge to the front and rear of the tank, powered by a 290hp BMW Va engine. While Krupp kept the same chassis as Rheinmetall, he redesigned the main turret to mount the two guns in coaxial, replaced the engine with a 300hp Maybach HL 108 TR and also redesigned the machine-gun turrets deemed out of place on a sloped glacis, three prototypes were build in 1935-1936. However the armour wasn't particularly thicker compared to its contemporary a massive default for a "heavy tank".

Operational History[]

The tanks never entered production and the project was discontinued near the end of 1936 in favour of the Panzer IV, suiting more Guderian's Blitzkrieg tactics and no more prototype were built. The tanks were used as propaganda purposes in 1939 at the International Automobile Exposition in Berlin, this role was further extended when the three Krupp prototypes were sent in Norway to give the impression of a larger production.

The tanks landed and paraded in Oslo on April 19th 1940, where they give a solid impression as, despite being under-armoured and handicapped by their speed, they were still an impressive sight and took part in local operations as part of a special platoon of the Panzer Abteilung 40. The Neubaufahrzeug part of Kampfgruppe Fischer was immobilised on its way to Lillehammer by mechanical problems and of the two Neubaufahrzeug part of Kampfgruppe Pellengahr only one managed to reach to front as the other suffered mechanical problems on north of Lillehammer. On April 22nd, the only remaining operationnal Neubaufahrzeug engaged British and Norwegian troops in the south of Gudbrand Valley alongside the Panzer Abteilung 40, where it was forced to retreat when British troops managed to pierce its armour several times with Boy's AT Rifles, killing one crew member. At some point one was immobilised in a Norwegian swamp and was destroyed with explosives by its crew.

After that what happened to the two remaining Krupp and the Rheinmetall prototypes is unknown, what is sure is that none of them survived the war and what remains of them is a small number of running gear parts preserved in the Gudbrandsdal Krigsminnesamling at Kvam in Norway.

Gekkan Senshado Magazine[]

Viking Fisheries High School fielded their Neubaufahrzeug as flag tank during the tournament first round match against Koala Forest High School. It stood is retreat during the whole match probably firing at Koala's tanks from a distance.

Viking again fielded their Neubaufahrzeug as flag tank during the quarter-finals match against Pravda Girls High School. As in the first round it stood in retreat in the city, especially because all Viking tanks are uneasy on mud, after they failed to lure Viking out of hiding Pravda make the KV-2 bombarding the city that reduced the town to rubble. After all Viking tanks were destroyed by the Red Wave, the Neubaufahrzeug was destroyed.

Das Finale[]

Viking Fisheries High School fielded their Neubaufahrzeug as flag tank during the Winter Continuous Track Cup first round match against Pravda Girls High School. After its escort tanks were destroyed by Katyusha, Klara and Nonna, it attempt to shoot its attacks but was slayed by Katyusha's T-34.

Trivia[]

  • The shot used for the destruction of the Neubaufahrzeug is nearly the same as the KV-2's destruction in Episode 9.
  • The Neubaufahrzeug is the first multi-turreted tank to appears in the series, first being mentioned in the Gekkan Senshado Magazine preceding the T-28 in Phase Erika.
  • Having its two guns in coaxial, Viking's tank should be a Neubaufahrzeug Ausf.B (made by Krupp), however the two machine-gun turrets based on the Panzer I's turret were only featured on the Neubaufahrzeug Ausf.A (made by Rheinmetall), Krupp's machine-gun turrets were more round-shaped.
  • This the first tank that cannot reverse to appear in the series, having a gearbox that didn't featured a reverse position.
  • The fact that a Norwegian-themed school use this tank is because the Neubaufahrzeug's only 100% sure engagement was during the Norwegian Campaign of 1940.
