Kinuyo Nishi (西 絹代, Nishi Kinuyo) is a major supporting character in Girls und Panzer.
Profile[]
She's not the most skilled, or the most savvy commanding officer to take up the mantle - but what Kinuyo Nishi lacks in experience, she makes up for in eagerness. As one of the younger COs in charge of an entire battalion, Kinuyo has much to learn about the art of armored warfare, and what it means to be a combat leader.
Kinuyo has a lot of things going for her. She's confident, well-liked by her subordinates, and she has the charisma to inspire troops to give their best for her and the team. But one thing shackles her the most - her school's deference to tradition. Chi-Ha-Tan Academy is known for its long history of head-on charges at enemy forces. An effective strategy... if you're fighting an army of toddlers. IJA tanks aren't the toughest when it comes to head-to-head clashes, so most charges often end with a pile of white flags, and smoking Chi-Ha-Tan wrecks.
Beyond that, though Kinuyo gets along well with her executive officers, they're prone to acting on their emotions. This means that even the slightest hint of success - or failure - will incite them to abandon all sense of reason and charge right into their enemies' line of fire, often with disastrous results, and even without orders from Kinuyo herself.
The saving grace? Kinuyo learns from these failures. She's been adding to her playbook, with every knocked out tank, every defeat, every time a charge went pear-shaped. And that only means one thing - if defeat is the rock, Kinuyo is the river. She will overcome not through power, but sheer persistence.
Appearance[]
Kinuyo has a medium build, with long black hair reaching to her mid-section, and brown eyes. She parts her hair towards the middle of her hair, with a fringe on the right side of her face.
In combat, Kinuyo wears a brown combat jacket with two breast pockets, two hip pockets, and white lapels. She also wears a white undershirt, and a yellow skirt. Kinuyo completes her look with black riding boots.
Kinuyo braiding Fukuda's hair.
One of the examples of Kinuyo's deference to command.
Combat style[]
Kinuyo originally deferred to more experienced commanders for battle strategies, such as Miho Nishizumi during their exhibition match. Her preferred strategy was the traditional Chi-Ha-Tan frontal charge - which usually ended in disaster.
Between the events of the Battle for Ooarai and the Winter Continuous Track Cup, Kinuyo held strategy meetings to improve her leadership, and her school's tactics. Since then, she has improved on her flexibility in battle, incorporating more tactical maneuvers into her strategies. To inspire her subordinates, most of these maneuvers have names incorporating the word 'charge'. In more recent battles, Kinuyo favors ambush strategies, using camouflage and the terrain to get her tanks close enough to assure a kill.
Though the IJA tanks she uses have low firepower, her strategies enable them to take on opponents which possess more powerful armaments. Kinuyo is also skilled in jungle warfare, with the lighter IJA tanks being able to outmaneuver and outrun heavier opponents in the dense foliage and soft, muddy terrain. She also has access to the amphibious Type 2 Ka-Mi, allowing her to traverse and attack from bodies of water.
Quotes[]
- (Der Film) "I've considered multiple possibilities...and I feel like charging is the best option!"
- (Der Film) "Let's compromise, how about "Operation Sukiyaki"?"
Etymology[]
- The name Kinuyo means "silk" (絹) (kinu) and "generation" (代) (yo).
- Kinuyo's surname Nishi means "west" (西).
Trivia[]
- Kinuyo's birthday, December 8th, marks the following events:
- The simultaneous invasion of the Shanghai International Settlement, Malaya, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies by the Japanese armed forces, marking the country's entry into WWII as a member of the Axis.
- The delivery of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech, marking the United States' entry into WWII as a member of the Allies.
- Kinuyo is named after Colonel Baron Takeichi Nishi, an Imperial Japanese Army officer.
- Born as the illegitimate third son to Tokujiro Nishi, a baron under the kazoku peerage system, Nishi succeeded his father's title at the age of ten. He eventually enrolled into an officer cadet school, commissioning as a second lieutenant in October 1924, and represented Japan at the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, clinching the gold medal in equestrian show jumping. Nishi would later go on to assume command of the IJA's 26th Tank Regiment, which was deployed to Iwo Jima. He would die in the Battle of Iwo Jima, aged 42, from unknown causes.
- Outside of sensha-do, Kinuyo enjoys motorcycle riding, and has been seen riding a 1972 Kawasaki Z1.
- Kinuyo likens the bike to "Uranus", her namesake's horse with which he won his 1932 Olympic gold medal. [1]
- Kinuyo has two younger brothers.
- Kinuyo's quote in Girls und Panzer: der Film references a message from Japanese admiral Heihachiro Togo, during the Battle of Tsushima.
- Fought as the final naval battle of the Russo-Japanese War, Togo ordered the hoisting of the maritime 'Z' flag, which was predetermined among his fleet to mean "The fate of our Empire depends upon this fight, let every man do his utmost duty."
