- ―Erwin about the StuG III
Riko Matsumoto (松本 里子, Matsumoto Riko), also known as Erwin (エルヴィン, Eruvin), is a supporting character in Girls und Panzer.
Profile[]
Confident. Crafty. Calm under fire. Riko Matsumoto embodies the best of the legendary German field marshal whose name she proudly bears. Though "Erwin" comes decades after the former Wehrmacht leader, she continues his legacy, both in her sense of fashion, and as a decisive combat leader.
With Ooarai's powerful Sturmgeschütz III at her command, a treasure trove of European historical knowledge, and the support of her fellow reki-jo (history buffs), Riko is a valuable ally to have in sensha-do - and a dangerous enemy to face.
Appearance[]
Riko has short blonde hair, styled into spikes on either side, and a medium build.
At school, Riko customizes her Ooarai uniform by tying the neckerchief into a bow, and wearing Marschstiefel (German military marching boots) in place of regular school shoes. She also wears a dark green field marshal's cap and an Afrika Corps uniform jacket, similar to those worn by her namesake. Riko also has a pair of British WWII anti-gas goggles attached to the cap, just as her namesake used to wear.
In Sensha-do, Riko wears the blue Ooarai uniform jacket, and her field marshal's cap.
Combat Experience[]
For a full breakdown of Riko's combat experience, see the page for Hippo Team.
Etymology[]
- The name Riko means "village" (里) (ri) and "child" (子) (ko).
- Her soul name Erwin means "respected friend" in German.
- Riko's surname Matsumoto means "pine tree, fir tree" (松) (matsu) and "base, root, origin" (本) (moto).
Trivia[]
- Riko's favorite flower is the cornflower, and her favorite tank is the German Jagdpanther tank destroyer.
- Riko's birthday, June 18th, is the anniversary of several important WWII political speeches:
- Former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill's "Finest Hour" speech to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.
- French general and statesman Charles de Gaulle's Appeal of 18 June (L'Appel du 18 juin), often considered to mark the start of the French Resistance.
- Additionally, while not related to WW2, on the same day in 1815, the Battle of Waterloo took place, where Napoleon Bonaparte's Grande Armee was defeated by the combined forces of Arthur Wellesley (more commonly known as the Duke of Wellington) and Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, thus ending the Napoleonic Wars for good.
- Riko's soul name "Erwin" is inspired by German field marshal Erwin Rommel, also known as "der Wüstenfuchs" (The Desert Fox).
- Rommel commanded the Wehrmacht's 7th Panzer Division during Germany's 1940 invasion of France, and led German and Italian forces in the former's North African campaign. He is considered one of the ablest tank commanders of the war, and earned the respect of his adversaries.
- Riko's hairstyle resembles a pair of fox's ears sticking out from either side of her cap, similar to Erwin Rommel's nickname.
- Riko's seiyuu, Satomi Moriya, also voices the following characters:
- Chiyoko Uenishi, a Type 2 Ka-Mi amphibious tank commander from Chi-Ha-Tan Academy.
