- "Azusa, you sound just like Commander Nishizumi right now!"
- ―Yuuki Utsugi during the match against Anzio
Azusa Sawa (澤 梓, Sawa Azusa) is a supporting character in Girls und Panzer.
Profile[]
Don't let the fact that she's a first-year catch you off-guard. Azusa Sawa is a decisive, confident combat leader, with tactical expertise beyond her years. Throw in two main armaments and five other eager first-years into the mix - and you've got one of the fiercest, most unpredictable crews ever to take to the battlefield.
As commander of Ooarai's Rabbit Team, Azusa has been the brains behind some of Ooarai's most innovative, successful operations. From taking down Kuromorimine's toughest tank destroyers, to using a Ferris wheel as a force multiplier, any tank crew should beware the M3 Lee - and the girl who would be Ooarai's next commanding officer.
Appearance[]
As one of the younger members of Ooarai's Sensha-do team, Azusa has a short build. She has short brown hair, and dark brown eyes.
She is usually seen in the Ooarai uniform, and wears the dark blue Ooarai Sensha-do tank jacket in combat.
Combat Experience[]
For a full breakdown of Azusa's combat experience, see the page for Rabbit Team.
Etymology[]
- The name Azusa means "catalpa tree" (梓).
- Catalpa is a tree with large heart-shaped leaves, clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers, and long, slender seed pods, native to North America and eastern Asia and cultivated as an ornamental.
- Azusa's surname Sawa means "marsh" (澤).
Trivia[]
- Azusa's favourite flower is baby's breath, and her favorite tank is the British A34 Comet I.
- Azusa's birthday, December 6th, marks the start of the Battle of Taipale, fought as part of the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union.
- Just over three months after the outbreak of World War II, the Winter War began, and the Battle of Taipale was a major engagement between Finnish and Soviet forces. Despite Soviet numerical superiority, they were unable to break through the Finnish defenses at the Karelian Isthmus.
- Before choosing sensha-do, Azusa had chosen kadō (flower arrangement) as her extra-curricular activity.[1]
- Azusa and her teammate Yuuki Utsugi are fans of St. Gloriana Girls' College.[2]
- Azusa has a younger brother.
- Azusa is named after Azusa Iwashimizu and Homare Sawa, a defender and midfielder respectively on Japan's 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup squad.
- Homare Sawa was the captain of this squad - just as how Azusa ranks highly in Ooarai's chain of command.
- Due to her leadership skills, Azusa has been compared to Miho Nishizumi[3].
- As of the spin-off manga Girls und Panzer: Little Army II, Azusa has assumed the role of Ooarai's executive officer under Miho, as seen in Ooarai's match against Bellwall Academy.
- Azusa's combat operation names are inspired by classic war films:
- Operation "Kelly's Heroes" is a reference to the 1970 film of the same name, in which Sergeant "Oddball" out-maneuvers the German defenses in his M4 Sherman tank.
- Operation "Mifune" is a reference to the film 1941 (1979), in which a submarine commanded by Imperial Japanese Navy officer Akiro Mitamura (played by Toshiro Mifune) attacks a Ferris Wheel, blasting it off its supports and causing it to start rolling.
- Operation "Tom Horn" is a reference to the 1980 film of the same name, featuring actor Steve McQueen as the eponymous character. However, the action plan is inspired by The Great Escape (1963), in which protagonist Virgil Hilts (also played by Steve McQueen) attempts to escape German soldiers on a motorcycle.
